There is an epidemic of cancer today. One in three Americans will be diagnosed with cancer, often before the age of 65. I myself have been on the wrong side of this statistic since I was 31 years old, when I discovered I had brain cancer.

Since 1940, we have seen in western societies a marked and rapid increase in common types of cancer. In fact, cancer in children and adolescents has been rising by 1 to 1.5% a year since the 1960’s. And these are cancers for which there is no screening.

The adventure began around Christmas 2002, when I was 28. The Hollywood dermatologist I saw for a yearly check-up missed the big black mole in the middle of my back. He was in a hurry to administer Botox in the next room.

I had, improbably, returned to the scene of the crime a few weeks later. His associate, a young woman in her thirties, recommended another full body check ("two sets of eyes are better than one"). She caught it, and I think she saved my life.

My dad died of colon cancer when I was 16. When I was 40, the same age as my father at the time of his death, my uncle called to tell me that he had just received a diagnosis of - dramatic sting here - COLON CANCER!

I’m not trying to be theatrical. The dramatic sting is exactly how I normally hear the word “cancer”, even when it’s whispered, which it usually is. That’s because it’s my ringtone. On my 40th birthday I got a mammogram.

Not as a gift. And not as a celebration, in the way that you might get a tattoo on your birthday, or go skydiving. It wasn't something I always wanted to do. I simply had a routine appointment at Sloan-Kettering in New York, and it happened to be my 40th birthday, and I didn't appreciate the lameness of the timing until the receptionist asked for my date of birth.

Lumpectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, menopause-inducing medication, Herceptin, homeopathic remedies, injected three times a week and a double mastectomy - almost six years later.

I've become an unintentional expert on the "etiquette of cancer." Or the lack thereof.

In truth, what my disease has done to disrupt my life sometimes pales in comparison to the episodes "well meaning people" (WMPs) have often made me endure. Looking back, the list is seemingly endless . . .

A cooler, windier day. Francesca is walking through her garden, no longer abloom. She’s bundled-up. Paul is moving across the lawn with some tea on a tray. He puts it down on the patio table. She sits down, tired. A paper napkin blows away. She starts to retrieve it, but can’t move fast enough.

I'll get it.

He captures the napkin. He sits down. She pours the tea.
