In God's Hands

"In God's Hands" is an excerpt from Hope, Faith and Charlie, a memoir about survivor Charlie Capodanno’s courageous battle with Stage IV brain cancer at just six months old and his family’s unwavering fight for his life.

Later that afternoon, the pastor from our church, Father Tom Walsh, stopped over. I had called him and asked him if he could come down to talk to my husband John and me as we agonized over the terrifying decision we were forced to make. I was holding Charlie in my arms as I opened the front door to greet him.

The Doctor as Patient

Doctors are experts in guiding patients through the healthcare maze. But what happens when the tables are turned and the doctor becomes the patient, faced with his or her own personal battle against cancer?

While doctors are quick to acknowledge that they have been fortunate to be able to consult with colleagues who either are, or can recommend, top doctors in the field, they admit that ultimately they take the same approaches that they would recommend to their patients.

Wade Boggs on a horse. Chris Chambliss rounding the bases. Mickey Mantle striking out.

Bat day. Giants games. Giants practices. The Monuments, Yankee franks, the endless string of huge games against the Red Sox.

TREAT THE CANCER EPIDEMIC AS WE DID CHOLERA

There is an epidemic of cancer today. One in three Americans will be diagnosed with cancer, often before the age of 65. I myself have been on the wrong side of this statistic since I was 31 years old, when I discovered I had brain cancer.

Since 1940, we have seen in western societies a marked and rapid increase in common types of cancer. In fact, cancer in children and adolescents has been rising by 1 to 1.5% a year since the 1960’s. And these are cancers for which there is no screening.

Life to Art: Waiting Room

The adventure began around Christmas 2002, when I was 28. The Hollywood dermatologist I saw for a yearly check-up missed the big black mole in the middle of my back. He was in a hurry to administer Botox in the next room.

I had, improbably, returned to the scene of the crime a few weeks later. His associate, a young woman in her thirties, recommended another full body check ("two sets of eyes are better than one"). She caught it, and I think she saved my life.

Lung Cancer—Coming Soon to a Non-Smoker Near You

So what if lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer in the world? I won’t get it. I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life.

Neither had Dana Reeve, Christopher Reeve’s wife, who announced she had been diagnosed with lung cancer less than a year after his death and then died a mere seven months later.

But let’s not focus on Dana Reeve… a young mother who died in the prime of her life from a cancer that doesn’t seem “fair” given that she never smoked. That’s too sad. Too tragic.

SU2C gets its message across with the help of lots and lots of statistics. Here's a complete list of facts and figures used in the big show. We cited them for you so you don't have to go searching for them. (You're welcome.)

A 1% reduction in cancer deaths would add $500 billion into the US economy.

Pediatric Cancer Research – A Progress Report

How is the fight against childhood cancer going? Ask a family who has lost their child to cancer, and they will tell you just how much we have to learn. Ask a family whose child receives a cutting edge treatment that saves his or her life, and you will hear how grateful they are for such progress, even as they talk about the long-term effects of treatment their child still suffers. Researchers and oncology specialists only confirm these sentiments. Most agree that we have come a long way, but there is still a mountain ahead of us to climb.

Racial Disparities in Cancer: Statistics and Solutions

Cancer mortality rates have declined significantly in the U.S. since the early 1990s: over 18% among men and over 10% among women. Breast cancer is no exception, as the death rate among women decreased from 33.1 per 100,000 in 1990 to 24.0 per 100,000 in 2005. At the same time, five-year survival increased from 84.8% in 1990 to 90.5% in 2000.

Robin Roberts didn’t get where she is today by luck of the draw. From her childhood in Mississippi, to her becoming a college basketball star, ESPN host, and co-anchor of Good Morning America, Robin’s faith and deep-rooted belief in the importance of staying true to one’s self guided her through her incredible journey to the top. She has long credited seven rules with keeping her on the path to fulfillment and success—but after being diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2007, she has added the all-important eighth rule of early detection.

Impatience and Understanding

If you lived in New York City in 1900, you faced the industrial revolution of the 19th century, plus severe overcrowding owing to massive immigration. NYC had no running water and no sewage system. Infectious diseases were rampant. In the US, the life expectancy in 1900 was 47 years. If you had a child, he or she had a one in ten chance of dying before age 4. Pneumonia, tuberculosis, and diarrheal diseases were the top three causes of death, accounting for 30% of all deaths.

Check Out Those Breasts

Forty percent of American women skip their annual breast exam. Why? Well, whether you're in for a mammogram or a manual checkup by your gynecologist, having your breasts palpated, squashed and smashed in the name of health-consciousness is not exactly a day at the beach. Couple that with the scant possibility that all this unpleasantness could result in a cancer diagnosis and most of us would rather spend our time voluntarily undergoing a root canal.

The Wonders of Health Tubing

My dad died of colon cancer when I was 16. When I was 40, the same age as my father at the time of his death, my uncle called to tell me that he had just received a diagnosis of - dramatic sting here - COLON CANCER!

I’m not trying to be theatrical. The dramatic sting is exactly how I normally hear the word “cancer”, even when it’s whispered, which it usually is. That’s because it’s my ringtone. Every time someone mentions cancer, I also seem to get a call on my cell. It works out perfectly, because that’s how harrowing the word is to me.

Making It Personal

The treatment options for many kinds of cancer have improved tremendously over the years. But two particular challenges have dogged cancer researchers for as long as we have been treating patients with this disease.

Why do some patients benefit from a course of therapy while others, apparently with the same or similar cancer, don’t?

How do we tailor all of our therapies – surgery, radiation, chemotherapy – to optimize their effects against cancer cells while steering clear of healthy cells and tissue?

Hospice: A Calling

When Vallerie Martin tells people what she does for a living, the most common response is, “Oh, that must be so depressing.” Martin has been a hospice nurse for seventeen years, and despite working in a field where the burnout rate is about two years, she says she cannot imagine doing anything else. Her reaction to the notion that her work is “sad and depressing” is this: “It is a great privilege to do this work.”

The Last Lecture

AN INJURED LION STILL WANTS TO ROAR

A lot of professors give talks titled “The Last Lecture.” Maybe you’ve seen one. It has become a common exercise on college campuses. Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can’t help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?

Caregiver Tips: The Big Balancing Act

I became a caregiver when my 15-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer in 1999. It’s been nine years and I’m still exhausted. But I have learned a lot along the way, some things that I believe are important for every caregiver, regardless of your relationship to the person with cancer (parent, spouse, child, friend, co-worker) or the amount of time you will devote and duties you will fulfill.

Re-Touch

Do you remember that show from the 90s “Touched by an Angel”? Where there would be some dying kid or down-and-out street person or someone who needed to be cured of an illness and Della Reese would place her loving angel hand upon their face and erase any sign of discomfort, disgrace, or disease? I think I was touched by an angel. Actually, it was more like molestation. Yeah, I guess I was molested by an angel.

Centuries ago, when disease was thought to result from a disruption of the body’s four basic “humors” – fluids that collectively governed health – treatments were designed to bring them back into balance. “Therapies,” some of them ghastly by modern standards, were intended to relieve patients of harmful surpluses of certain humors.

Hey, filmmakers! If you've been hard at work on your entry for the SU2C film challenge, you should know that submissions are due tomorrow evening -- that's Friday, August 1 -- at midnight. And because we're on the Left Coast, we'll give all of you in the rest of the US of A a break and make that midnight PST. Better brew another pot of coffee -- time is running out!

Dream Teams: The Top Ten

Cartoon By Mollie Lief

We‘re willing to concede that SU2C.org Coordinator Mollie Lief’s conception of the Ultimate Dream Team (above) likely wouldn’t work out in terms of practical application. We’d need some combination of a time machine and hard-core smelling salts, not to mention several UN interpreters and probably someone to teach our esteemed team members how to use a microscope. Or a light switch. Plus, Einstein had that pipe. That’s no good for cancer research.

Beyond The Bench

We often treat cancer survivors as we do competition winners, as champions over a disease that absorbed their lives for a time and threatened their careers. They beat it, we say, won the fight against an unforgiving foe.

As anyone who has lost someone to cancer can tell you, you don’t beat cancer. You fight, you live to fight another day. Sometimes it goes away. Sometimes you do.

Four doctors, one physical therapist, hundreds of anti-inflammatories, numerous x-rays, whirlpool treatments and ultrasound treatments later, I was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer that typically occurs in children.

The Ins and Outs of Genetic Testing

From the time of Hippocrates (400 BC) all the way through to the nineteenth century, prevailing scientific thought held that the workings of the human body were dictated by the four “humors,” or bodily fluids: black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood. Ridiculous, sure, but also comforting; all medical problems were thought to constitute either a deficiency or a surplus of fluids, meaning any illness could theoretically be cured by correcting the imbalance.

Before Terrie Magro got married in 1983, her last name was Combatti, which seems almost too perfect. Combatti means "fight" in Italian -- as in "Fight for your children" or "Fight to make life easier for families who are going through what you went through." Those are two things Terrie Combatti Magro has done in spades.

A Toxic Conversation

My very good friend Andrea Ravinette Martin—-the charismatic founder of the Breast Cancer Fund--used to say, "The only way I will know I have really survived breast cancer is when I die of something else."

She did: when she was fifty-six, a new and unrelated malignancy of the brain turned her into a breast cancer survivor.

The Pursuit of Life and Basketball

George Karl loves holding court with the media, something he does three times the day of a game.

Sometimes, when Karl knows he's going to be talking for a long time, he requests a chair to be brought so he can sit down. The Denver Nuggets coach then pontificates about basketball or anything else anybody wants to ask.

But there was a day in early 2006 when the usually loquacious Karl found himself tongue-tied. It was the day his son, Coby, called to say he had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

The Cancer Diet

In his rear view mirror Tony could see the last golden-red scrap of sun falling behind the curve of the world. It was beautiful, almost like somewhere far away an entire city was on fire, and he wanted to show it to Jasper. But Jasper wouldn't have cared. His son didn't care about the sun.

"How much farther, you think?" Tony asked him instead. They'd already been on the road for a while.

"What?"

Cancer Isn't Graceful

When I would tell people that my mother was undergoing treatment for cancer, I frequently got the impression that the listener was flashing to a paler-than-normal Meryl Streep baking cookies and lovingly throwing a costume party to cheer up her grieving family.

Cancer has the best comedic timing. No one ever sees it coming. When's the last time a friend said to you, "Guess what? I'm going to have cancer tomorrow." Never. That's not something you are ever going to hear. Cancer likes showing up totally unannounced. It loves being the worst surprise party ever.

Why Now

To some extent, the answer to that question would be Martin Luther King, Jr.’s answer: "Now, because it is long overdue."

But what is special about now is that there have been three developments in the field of cancer research that have caused the tumblers in nature’s cosmic lock to align so that it is possible, for the first time, to open the safe.

What Is Cancer

Cancer is the end result of a series of enduring mistakes, known as mutations, made by cells during the normal process of cell division that continually replaces aging cells.

We are at a critical moment in the history of cancer research. Recent discoveries in science and technology have dramatically altered and increased our understanding of the biological events that lead to cancer. This new knowledge paves the way for improving diagnosis as well as developing better therapies and preventive strategies.

It is an experiment that will involve not only laboratory scientists and clinicians, but potentially every American.

Happy Mammogram!

On my 40th birthday I got a mammogram.

Not as a gift. And not as a celebration, in the way that you might get a tattoo on your birthday, or go skydiving. It wasn't something I always wanted to do. I simply had a routine appointment at Sloan-Kettering in New York, and it happened to be my 40th birthday, and I didn't appreciate the lameness of the timing until the receptionist asked for my date of birth.

He captures the napkin. He sits down. She pours the tea.

The clasp went click over the veins popping out of his skinny wrists. He had never felt handcuffs, but he imagined that there was something kindred in the feeling of buckling into a too-tight watch for the first time. He did not complain.
