Cervical cancer is a malignant tumor that develops in the cervix - the part of the uterus that extends into the vaginal tract. Worldwide, cervical cancer is the third deadliest form of cancer among women. There are about one-half million new cases per year, and, globally, more than 50 percent of women who get cervical cancer die from it. More than 80 percent of deaths caused by cervical cancer occur in under-developed countries.

In 2007, and again this year, the U.S. Congress declared May as National Cancer Research Month in recognition of high quality, innovative cancer research. In the past 35 years, the five-year survival rate for all cancers combined has increased to more than 65% due to the progress of cancer research, which includes advances in cancer prevention, detection and clinical cancer management. We as physicians have been able to save many more lives because of this, but we still have much further to go. Cancer research is the key to moving forward.

I have always had the science bug. Growing up, I idolized scientists who made major contributions to society. So, I decided to pursue dermatology because I wanted to help prevent and treat melanoma.

The incidence of melanoma is rising, and the survival rate for those with advanced disease has been static at 15 percent. Each year, nearly 70,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the United States, and nearly 9,000 people die from the disease. It is my hope that research will soon be able to help improve these startling statistics.

Colon cancer is the second largest cause of cancer death in men and women combined, affecting people of all ages. Surgery is often an option for those patients whose cancer is caught early, but sadly, we have just a few lines of treatment for patients with advanced disease. The hope is that our research will one day develop better therapies for patients whose cancer is too advanced for surgery.

Little did she know beating leukemia was only the first of many battles Wossene Bowler would face in her lifetime.

Born and raised in Ethiopia, Bowler moved to the United States in 1980. Twenty years later, she and her husband were living in Singapore when she was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia while undergoing fertility testing.

“The first time they told me I had leukemia, I didn’t know how bad it was,” recalls Bowler. “I told the doctor, ‘I don’t want to know anything about the illness or the side effects. Just heal me.’”

Maybe you’ve noticed a small group of women in New York’s Manhattan, recognized mainly by their limitless palette of wig colors, shapes, and sizes. But chances are, you couldn’t tell who was celebrating her triumph over cancer, and whose battle against the disease had just begun.

With her wedding just seven weeks away, the last thing 32-year-old Jennifer Finkelstein expected was to be dragged into the bathroom in the middle of the night, inspected under harsh fluorescent lights. Her fiancée Robert, a physician, was concerned about a lump he detected in her breast.

The beautiful baby boy they decided to call Alec was already in Vananh’s womb when she and Stephen got married. They would later refer to him as their miracle child; his conception had reunited the couple after a five-year separation. In a new, custom-built home in a quiet suburb of Portland, Stephen and Vananh quickly settled into their life as a newlywed couple, parents to a wonderful, healthy boy. Looking around, they couldn’t help but feel blessed.

Lisa White first realized the therapeutic power of music in 1996 when her son, Gabe, was diagnosed with leukemia. Starting at the age of two, Gabe underwent 38 months of treatment. "He started using music a lot on his own to calm himself down," White recalls. Gabe's CD of choice was White Ladder by David Gray; he'd listen to it before bed to help himself get to sleep. "He'll be ten years off treatment next month," White says, "and we all still listen to it when we're tired."

For the past two years, my right shoulder ached from throwing thousands of footballs to my 14-year-old son AJ, trying to lead him just right on deep post patterns. After the last throw, it would hurt from catching the big lug as he ran and jumped into my arms, yelling "The Bills win the Super Bowl, the Bills win the Super Bowl!" (Just us dreaming.) It hurt from pitching as fast as I could so he wouldn’t hit me, but he always did. My shoulder hurt enough that I only slept on my left side -- rolling over on it would wake me in the night. But I didn't care. I loved it.

Three years ago, I received the results of my BRCA test and found out that I have the breast cancer gene known as BRCA2, which leaves me with a high risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Though I had suspected I had a higher risk because of my family history, the test confirmed it. There is an epidemic of cancer today. One in three Americans will be diagnosed with cancer, often before the age of 65. I myself have been on the wrong side of this statistic since I was 31 years old, when I discovered I had brain cancer.

Since 1940, we have seen in western societies a marked and rapid increase in common types of cancer. In fact, cancer in children and adolescents has been rising by 1 to 1.5% a year since the 1960’s. And these are cancers for which there is no screening.

My dad died of colon cancer when I was 16. When I was 40, the same age as my father at the time of his death, my uncle called to tell me that he had just received a diagnosis of - dramatic sting here - COLON CANCER!

I’m not trying to be theatrical. The dramatic sting is exactly how I normally hear the word “cancer”, even when it’s whispered, which it usually is. That’s because it’s my ringtone. Every time someone mentions cancer, I also seem to get a call on my cell. It works out perfectly, because that’s how harrowing the word is to me.

On my 40th birthday I got a mammogram.

Not as a gift. And not as a celebration, in the way that you might get a tattoo on your birthday, or go skydiving. It wasn't something I always wanted to do. I simply had a routine appointment at Sloan-Kettering in New York, and it happened to be my 40th birthday, and I didn't appreciate the lameness of the timing until the receptionist asked for my date of birth.

Lumpectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, menopause-inducing medication, Herceptin, homeopathic remedies, injected three times a week and a double mastectomy - almost six years later.
