Meet Ironman Heap

October 23, 2013 9:09 PM

After I fractured my hip running the NY Marathon two years ago, Chris and I decided that we should each stick to our strengths in our fundraising efforts. Clearly, he is better at the physical part, and I am better at the money part. So, after a two year break from racing and raising money, my crazy, wonderful and inspirational husband is about to take part in his first Ironman competition. Oh, yes, the triathlon a few weeks ago was just a warm-up! This Sunday, October 27th, Chris will be swimming biking and running in the Ironman 70.3 Austin â€" that’s a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike, followed by a 13.1 mile run. Jaeger, Jaz and I will be cheering him on at the finish line!

Why are we supporting Stand Up to Cancer?

October 23, 2013 9:09 PM

Chris and I searched long and hard for a cancer charity that we wanted to support this year. There are so many wonderful charities doing incredible work, but one of the key factors in making our decision was looking at how much money each charity spends on RESEARCH. We need more research! We all know far too many people battling this horrible disease, and we all know far too many people whose lives have ended far too soon. 1 in every 2 men, and 1 in every 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. We need scientists working together to find better, smarter and more effective treatments NOW!

Where does the money go?

October 23, 2013 8:08 PM

Working with the top experts in cancer research, Stand Up To Cancer is forging a new way to develop breakthroughs that will end cancer. 100% of public funds go towards research grants for all types of cancers. SU2C’s unique funding model encourages collaboration and innovation through two types of scientific grant: 1)Dream Team grants - these are awarded to multi-institutional groups of scientists who work collaboratively, rather than competitively, to develop new treatments quickly in order to save lives now. 2)Innovative Research Grants - these support groundbreaking cancer research projects that are high-risk but could also be high-impact, and have the potential to significantly affect patient care.
