Senator Arlen Specter's Call to Action

Recently, Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter wrote to SU2C about renewing and refocusing the energy of the federal government to push for progress in the war on cancer.

As the Senator's message points out, we have the power to make a crucial difference in how the United States government treats cancer and those affected by it. In order to do so, we have to act to put pressure on our elected representatives.

Please read Senator Specter's letter and get involved by e-mailing congress.

Executive Leadership Committee
Stand Up To Cancer

Dear Members of the Executive Leadership Committee:

I want to congratulate you on your September 5, 2008 "Stand Up to Cancer" television special and your innovative idea of raising funds from private sources for cutting-edge research.

Senator Tom Harkin and I have been, in a way, conducting our own fund-raising campaign--doubling the appropriation for the National Institutes of Health from $13 billion in 1998 to $26 billion in 2003. Unfortunately, since that time, our efforts have fallen short. Funding for medical research has become stagnant, not even keeping pace with inflation. Research grants have been trimmed back or eliminated all together. Ideas for testing bold new approaches to treating disease have been shunted to the back burner. Worse yet, promising young investigators--the future scientific leaders--have been discourages from entering this field of study.

I am asking that during your private fund-raising efforts, you call call on your viewers to raise their voices and demand that funding for the National Institutes of Health be doubled once again to $60 billion.

Particular attention should be given to the Members of Congress who have not been supportive, such as those who voted against stem cell legislation and increases for biomedical research funding in appropriations bills.

Once again, I commend you for your efforts on behalf of myself and the millions of Americans who are searching for new treatments in their fight against disease and disability.

Together we can be an unstoppable political force for increasing our investment in biomedical research. I thank you for joining me in this fight.

My Best,

Sincerely,

Arlen Specter
Ranking Member
Subcommmittee on Labor, Health
and Human Services and Education

Let our government know that we are paying attention, that the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute need help, and that they need help now: Go to the Get Involved page and e-mail Congress.

This summer Arlen Spector and every other senator as well as every representative voted to pass the Caroline Price Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act.
I am part of the many cancer moms who lobbied for this bill. We worked tirelessly to get it to go through, even sending kids with cancer and their parents to visit Washington for CureSearch. Senator Spector was moved to vote yes after meeting children with cancer and hearing so many constituents tell their stories about their kids with cancer. Please join all of us in working for research to end childhood cancer!

Even though I'm just a kid, I know the problems that people are facing right now. Everybody is apart of this problem and the only way to face this problem if everybody would be united. Not only Americans, but everybody.. I didn't meet my grandfather 'cause he died after a month I was born. We have our different reasons, but we have only goal that we wanna achieve. We just gotta keep our heads up, maybe we're too late to help those people who already passed away, but its never too late to help those people who are in need, especially your children.. God Bless! More POWER!

I think the cancer epidemic problem America faces today is largely because contaminated water, junk food, toxic drugs and smoke end up in everyone. Was 1-in-10. Now it's 1-in-2. Why is that so? It's all because of money-motivated, than health-motivated enterprises producing goods and services that harm than heal Americans over the long-run. If Americans want to see a 1-in-1000 ratio, the stuff Americans take everyday needs to be a whole lot different. The water has to become much cleaner, food be more nutritious, drugs be non-toxic and smoking become a thing of the past.
When every goods and services producer think and care about health-making than money-making first, then will we see the cancer epidemic go away. When companies start chasing after dollars and lie, lie, lie to get it, don't expect them to give you a cancer-free future.

Cancer is a very emotional topic for me, it has been in my family for many generations (as far back as I can remeber, from the stories of my ancestry).

I lost my mother Febuary 13, 2008 to colon and lung cancer. I am her only child, and being on my own now, even though she was sick all my life, she was just 48 which is relatively young, and I am concerned about how much longer I have if I'm prone to any of her ailments; at 22 that's a hard way to live, in constant fear, even if I don't think I'm worrying about it.

I live in Kingston Jamaica, but I am very moved by this 'Stand Up to Cancer' benefit and would be greatful for the help it can generate for the people in America and worldwide; there must be a cure, even though my mother was beyond remedy, and some of my relatives; I'd like to believe that sadly those patients to come can have hope.

I have a friend now who has throat cancer, and I'm really sad, because I know it's just a matter of time.

P.S. the all-star theme song has really brought me comfort and encouragement.

Love to you all and God Bless You

I recently heard that companies are allowed to patent genes and then charge cancer researchers for use - which makes cancer research much more expensive or even not possible.

Does anyone know if that is still in practice? Read this article from the International Herald. This seems like a major issue and I'm surprised not to see more recently US articles about it:

I am 1 of 5 sisters 3 of them have had breast cancer. 1 has passed away and another one has stage 4. The second one is having so much prombles even to walk around but at least she's alive.I worried about myself and I am even thinking of having them removed. And with all the studies why can't we get more support they can spend so much money sending men to the moon yet nothing is being done to fight this horrible disease. So PLEASE help us find a answer.

Everything is about money, and there is no money
in a cure. I found out the hard way when my daughter was diagnosed with a rare vaginal cancer. She was 2 years old. After extensive chemotherapy and surgeries, she is now a healthy 10 year old. My family went trough hell and back.
It is a horrible disease, especially for a child to go through. Every surgery and any drug that she needed was a fight with our insurance company.
It's bad enough going through this and then having some flunky at our insurance company making
decisions with our daughter's LIFE. It's all a big scam, the drug companies, insurance companies and of course, our government who are bought and
sold by them. I don't think I will ever see a cure
in my liftetime, but I hope to God my young daughter will live to see it in hers. GOD BLESS
ALL OF THE CANCER SURVIVORS AND THOSE WHO LOST THEIR BATTLE.

Hearing the words " the biopsy was positive. The tumor is malignant" obviously turns the world upside down Fortunately I can afford good health insurance. My treatment was swift I have great doctors and my prognosis is good.
I couldn't help but think of how everything would have been without healthcare insurance.
Please vote for Barack Obama. He, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton will secure healthcare that guarantees good care for everyone.

We need to do something, something now. There are too many types and kinds of cancer in today's world. Everyone is being affected and some of us are being affected multiple times, multiple occurrences, all the while loosing our friends. I personally appreciate the event and would hope that everyone would consider supporting it in any and every way possible.

I would not be alive today if all the techlogy was not there when I got esphousal cancer. They did a surgery for me at University of Michigan and years ago most people died from that cancer.
So research and money for research helps saves lifes. Thank you for listening.

At age 11, our daughter LEAH was dianosed with leukemia. After a much anticipated remission, after a disappointing relapse, after a grueling done marrow transplant, after another relapse, our lovely young daughter died at age 13 on July 10, 2007. We will StandUp2Cander with the nation. Our hope is that no other child, no other friend, mother, father, sister, brother will be lost to cancer. Please launch a star, donate to a star, write your congressman in support of this cause. Sincerely, Cindy

My name is Pam and I am a proud mother of Christopher who is 20 years old. In January 2008 he was diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma stage 3. He has gone thru his 12 chemo treatments and will now face 25 give or take radiation treatments. My son has no health insurance and was denied yes denied medicaid because they say he would probably be better before the 4 year protocal. He was also denied social security disability(he has a strong work history of taking care of a quadepalegic) because they looked in their crystal ball and decided he would be better before the 12mo. protocal. All i can say is thank god for the dr's who treated him and the nurses that took care of him and the dr's and nurses that will still be treating him with his ongoing treatment. We need to fight for these children that fall into the cracks of health reform. Young adults with cancer will always have health issues follow them even when in remissions because of their treatments to save their lives. When these kids should be at their happiest freespirit life they are worrying if they will survive how they are going to pay these bills and what will happen next all of no fault of their own. My son is strong and he is my hero and it just so happens that the Stand Up 2 Cancer program is on his birthday Sept.5 when he will be 21! Let him live a longlong happy life!

I would like to start by saying GOD bless you and keep that positive attitude you have tward this escalating and devestating disease. If enough people get involved in this cause it will be overwhelmingly sucessful, and some day we can look back and say i helped eliminate that killer. This should also be a telivised once a year telathon till we reach the magic number allowing scientists to find the cure.I am sixtyseven years old and i can tell you it has to be the hardest thing to live with being diognosed with cancer but with family support, a good doctor, willpower, faith, diet ,and treatment wonders never cease. Three years battling NHL i finaly got my clearence. Thank GOD. PLEASE, A PLEA TO EVERYONE TAKE PART it will pay off ten fold. thank you. AL Bastone

my husband was diagnosed with bladder cancer december 18, 2007. in march they removed his bladder and prostate and said he will be on heavy chemotherapy. it is july and the chemo is so extensive that he cannot get out of bed. our life has done a complete 360 as he cannot work anymore.he is 47 years old and cannot support our family anymore. he feels helpless. we need to spend money on cures that will not bring a man down so bad he cannot work anymore. we used to have a succesful business and now we are living on a small income from SSDI. we need to do something, in 6 months this has happened to us !

I was told on Dec. 27th,2005 that I had prostate cancer and should surgery ASAP as I only had 3-5 years left. After doing an extentise search on my options including visiting some the best hospitals in the US I was once again told the same thing but the amazing thing was the I was also told that if I did nothing I still had only about the same time. The cancer has not moved at all with only using natural supplements since then. I was amazed that with all our resources that in the year 2008 we still our trying to cure cancer the same way we 80years ago. I have to blame this on the drug companies, FDA and congress. There is a extremely legitimate cure that is going under testing created my someone not in the medical field that has passed all early tests but because the medical companies, doctors would suffer if this was approved the FDA which is paid by these groups is trying everything it can do to slow it down. Our true problem is the FDA in the cure for cancer. I will continue to go my route because I have been told repeatly that the current options that doctors have is no better than nothing.
I hope this does not get blocked and I will be able to read this blog soon. God Bless

I doubt any one will read this or there is any one will really care. I agree there needs to be more Reacearch, on cancer along with other needs.
I have been around cancer for quite some time now. My mother died, my father lost a kidney over this, my sister died two years ago, and while she was going through cancer her husband was too.
Now my husband is fighting cancer and his is only 20% chance of living although he is doing surprisingly well. We are now filing for disability, which I already know we will be turned down at least 3 times then we will need to get a lawyer to help us and after they get involved they take a good chunk of the money.
While we wait for this to happen, I am being harassed by credit cards and my mortgage company. So what will more than likely will happen to us? We will lose everything and end up living in the street in a cardboard box. While I am trying to find a job, if I can find a job after the creditors rune our credit and, because to get hired now, they will look at your credit report, which is turning into shit because of credit card people and the Mortgage Company, while we water for help from SSI to take effect which the Government is cutting back on the amount of it so we can still end up living in poverty.
Of course this is after we raised our two children in which are autistic. I actually am easier, if my live would just end.
So while all of you eat dinner, pay your bills, go to the doctor, on our tax dollars, after the fact we elected you in office, just so we the people end up on the short end of the stick again.
It is actually being screwed without the benefit of being kissed.
Sincerely,
JB
